I think another reason for the generalized passiveness of the US population Is that we're too busy surviving in our day-to-day lives (sometimes juggling two or three jobs) and don't have the energy to go demonstrating. A self-employed 60-year-old helping professional without health insurance (too expensive) working 70-odd hours a week just to be able to pay for my rent, utilities and groceries, I attended three protests, but then ran out of steam. I'm just too depleted living paycheck to paycheck to spend my scarce free time making phone calls, writing letters, etc. this is one of the many ways in which late-stage capitalism paves the way for tyranny -- the workers are too tired to revolt.
Thiw is why we old folks need to keep talking to you young 'uns to get them fired up and protesting! It's reallly their futures anf their freedom that are being stolen by these political gangsters!
