I have always thought that the joke about the Irishman who encountered a fight was both funny and telling. He asked the two participants if their imbroglio was a family affair--or could anybody join in. History shows that the Irish enjoyed fighting either for fun and excitement or no holds barred sans trepidation.

Then there is Mahatma Gandhi of whom it is said that he only peacefully battled the British because guns were not available.

While I allow that is better to strategize and win a battle without all of the deplorable killing, it also makes sense to still have the wherewithal to annihilate the enemy if necessary. As for all of the guns our country seems awash in, by far the majority are in the hands of law abiding citizens. Of course the problem arises from our capitalist culture that is in its last throws as a hegemonic baron. Greed is our god and millions of people are being sacrificed on the alter of expediency. We are witnessing the toothless becoming ruthless and will need our guns and ammunition if for no other reason than protection.

You all be sure to vote...whether it's Bloodbath Biden or Dictator Donald, it won't make any difference. A pile of shit is a pile of shit, however, the Republicans still believe in the 2nd Amendment.

Tori, The Second Amendment argument is bogus. Democrats aren't going to take away the right to own a gun. They are trying to reduce mass killings by outlawing large magazines and semiautomatic weapons, which are not needed either for home or personal defense or for hunting. There is no way any political party could outlaw guns in this country, nor would any person interested in being re-=elected ever suggest such a thing in this gun culture. Even in Europe where there are strict gun laws, people have pistols and rifles. The only country I know of that outright bans guns is Taiwan, and they have a universal male draft so every guy knows how to shoot and can be armed for national defense. Defending freedom of speech, press and assembly and making sure nobody is denied the right to vote are important issues., as is restoring the Posse Comitatus Act and keeping politics out of the military, not to mention slashing the military budget and size by at least 90%.

Not to mention that Taiwan, wtith its extremely tight gun laws happens to be the freest and most democrat polity in Asia, and among the freest and most democratic in the world, giving the lie to 2nd Amendment proponents; bogus claim that gun restrictions and threats to democracy go hand in hand and that unfettered gun ownership is essential to defending democracy.

Democrats, knowing that they have no power over criminals with guns, are not about to advertise they want to do away with the 2nd Amendment, but are employing by way of a thousand cuts restrictions that will otherwise achieve their desired goal. The argument that military like weapons are not needed for home or personal defense or hunting, therefore parity is unwarranted is specious because what they indeed may be needed for is defending against or defeating a corrupt government and, as you well know, our government is corrupt. It has no compunction about killing/assassinating anyone who threatens it. As the saying goes: People should not be afraid of their government, the government should be afraid of the people. Capitalism is inimical to democracy, always has been and always will be so the myth of this country belies its true nature. If voting could change anything, it would be illegal.

Tori, the problem i have with your argument is that in many capitalist countries around the world where guns are much more controlled and regulated than in this one (where you can now wander into anywhere but a school or a church), manage to be much freer and more democratic than this one. And that is the case despite their not having our vaunted First and Second Amendments. Also, perhaps more important, history shows clearly that what makes revolutions succeed is not when the public has more guns than the government but when the military and police refuse to kill or arrest protesters who than can overthrow the government by sheer numbers, not by greater fire-power. Look how the unarmed people of Venezuela defeated the military coup that arrested the elected president Hugo Chavez, but had to give up when millions of common people went to the presidential palace to demand his release, and the military rank-and-file refused to stop them. Look at how Bolivians did the same then when the capotalists ousted their popular leader. That is how a revolution works, not by trying to out gun the military. The fantasy of right-wing gun enthusiasts that they will defeat the power of the state with their adored guns is just that. Ain't never happened and won't.
